POSITION: ADULT CRIMINAL COURTWORKER
TERM: CONTRACT – FULL-TIME 35 HOURS/ WEEK

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Under the direct supervision of the Justice Section Manager, the successful candidate will be an energetic, innovative caring person who will assist Indigenous people who come into conflict with Federal, Provincial, Municipal laws. General responsibilities include providing consistent and ongoing attendance in advance of and during Criminal Court and Bail Court, with First Appearance Court being a priority.
Duties:
• Provide information, advocacy, and support to clients and their families.
• Assist adult clients involved in criminal court matters.
• Support clients in accessing legal advice.
• Act as a liaison and advocate on behalf of clients with justice system personnel.
• Provide information and advocacy for clients who may qualify for Indigenous-specific justice programs, such as the Indigenous Community Justice Program, Gladue Writer and Aftercare.
• Maintain comprehensive confidential files in accordance with File Maintenance Policies, ensuring documentation includes client demographics, contact history, services provided, charges, outcomes, and related correspondence.
• Prepare and submit accurate, detailed monthly and quarterly reports as required.
• Keep up-to-date and accurate case notes for each client interaction and ensure timely data entry into internal systems.
• Ensure all activities and interactions comply with confidentiality and privacy protocols.
• Promote awareness of alternative and restorative justice practices and support their implementation where appropriate.
• Maintain current knowledge of community resources, services, and culturally appropriate support to effectively refer and assist clients.
• To report regularly to the Justice Section Manager.
• To undertake any other such reasonable duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications:
• A post-secondary degree or diploma in a Justice Studies, Social Services or a related field.
• In-depth knowledge of the Canadian justice system, including court processes, criminal law procedures, and correctional services.
• Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Criminal Code of Canada, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Child, Youth and Family Services Act, and other applicable laws.
• Knowledge of the Gladue sentencing principles.
• Demonstrated experience working with individuals of Indigenous ancestry.
• Knowledge of Alternative and Restorative Justice Practices, with the ability to support diversion and culturally appropriate interventions.
• Comprehensive understanding of local community resources and N’Amerind programs.
• Strong interviewing and counseling skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, client-centered environment.
• Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, have access to a reliable vehicle, and be willing to travel as required.
• Knowledge of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC).
