Job Description

Position Title: Band Representative Officer

Location: Sarnia, ON

Duration: Permanent

Posting Closes/Deadline: June 28, 2024

Scope of the Position:

The Band Representative Officer will provide support to the Band Representative.

Responsibilities:

Primary Service Responsibilities

  • Deliver and execute high-quality administrative support to the Band Representative by:
    • Ensuring well defined processes, information collection, and documentation standards
    • Respond to questions, inquiries, and concerns through the day
    • Organize and attend meetings, events and training, taking minutes and creating agendas as required.
  • Ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies in all activities
  • Promote a positive image of the Child and Family Services Department families, and the public
  • Maintain professional manner in dealing with Aamjiwnaang Band members, staff, and the public
  • Contribute to wellbeing in a cooperative working environment in accordance with policies, procedures, and systems in place
  • Liaise with relevant agencies, professional associations, and other department leaders regarding agreements and services as required
  • Attend meetings with external agencies as required when Band Representative is unavailable. Document and consult with Band Representative following the meeting.
  • Attend court upon request. Document and consult with Band Representative following time spent in court
  • Adhere to the referral process and tend to needs as required, with occasional hours on evenings and weekends

Administration & Other

  • Adhere to appropriate file/case management practices and keeps proper client records, reports, and statistics as required
  • Maintain professional manner in dealing with Aamjiwnaang Band members, staff, and the public

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure workplace health and safety
    • Identify, report, and investigate potential risk(s) and accidents
    • Participate in training and corrective measures
  • Maintain awareness of and adherence to relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
  • Adhere to policies of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, along with relevant employment, and other legislative requirements.

  • Working knowledge in departmental area of discipline
  • Able to support the vision, purpose, and values of AFN
  • Sensitivity and respect for Indigenous issues
  • Able to maintain networks and relationships both inside and outside of the organization with relevant organizations and community partners

  • Proficient in associated software, programs, etc.

Experience and Qualifications

Education, Certification Requirements & Relevant Experience

  • Certificate/diploma in office administration, social work, or other related discipline
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in administrative support services
  • Experience (work or lived) in First Nations, understanding the needs, challenges, and political environment is an asset
  • A clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Demonstrate integrity and credibility and the ability to represent AFN with professional competence
  • Interest in First Nation wellbeing, home and community care, and community

In accordance with Section 16 Special Programs of the Canadian Human Rights Act, preference will be given to Aamjiwnaang Band Members with relevant education/experience (R.S.C 1985, c. H-6, s16 (1-3).

Preference may be given to First Nation candidates with relevant on reserve employment and/or those with knowledge and understanding of Aamjiwnaang and history and community.
