Camp Counsellor (CSJ)

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is hiring a Camp Counsellor for our summer season (8 weeks, beginning July 4th and ending August 26th. This position is 35hrs/week (9:00AM-4:00PM) Monday to Friday.

Please note: The Museum’s vaccination policy requires all staff to be fully vaccinated, according to provincial definitions, against Covid-19. Depending on circumstances, this job may require a combination of working from home and working on site at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology in London Ontario.

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is an independent registered charity supporting the education and preservation of Ontario’s archeological heritage. The museum holds over 2.5 million artifacts and is located adjacent to the Lawson Site village, a provincially designated archeological site once inhabited by up to 2,000 Indigenous peoples in the 16th century. As a heritage site, the MOA draws visitors and tourists of all ages seeking to learn more about Ontario’s history.

The Camp Counsellor will assist the Camp Coordinator with the delivery of the museum’s Summer Camp Program.

Works Tasks and Responsibilities include:

• Assisting the Camp Coordinator with delivery of the Summer Camp program
• Planning and delivering day-to-day camp activities
• Assisting in the administration, planning and supervision of Summer Day Camp
• Monitoring camp craft supplies and materials for camp craft, games and activities
• Ensuring the maintenance of a clean and safe camp environment

In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following skills:

• Experience working with children (in a classroom or camp setting would be an asset)
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills
• The ability to work independently and in a team environment
• A positive attitude and strong work ethic
• First Aid certification is required

• A clean criminal record and vulnerable sector check prior to employment
• Preference will be given to applicants who have completed at least some post-secondary education

The successful candidate must meet the criteria of the Canada Summer Jobs Program:

• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period ;
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and,
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

An ideal candidate will have a background and interest in Education, Anthropology/Archaeology, Public History, Museum Studies, First Nations Studies. They will possess both a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.

Characteristics of City/Region:

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is located in the northwest corner of the City of London, the traditional territory of the Munsee-Delaware, Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee Peoples and their Ancestors who have lived here from Time Immemorial. First named as a settler village by John Graves Simcoe in 1793, London has a rich and deep archaeological past, with evidence of human occupation from the period of glacial recession approximately 13,000 years ago, to the vibrant city that it is today. Adjacent to the Museum is a 500-year-old village once inhabited by approximately 2,000 Indigenous agriculturalists, today known as the Lawson Site. This site is considered one the region’s largest settlements before European contact.
