Position Title: 2-Camp Counselor

Location: 13 Moons Land-Based Learning Camp

Employment Type: Full-Time

Term: 2 years

Position Summary: The 13 Moons Land-Based Learning Camp is seeking two enthusiastic and dedicated youth to work in a dual position as both mentee while training, and youth mentor during camp programs.   The successful candidates will work closely with the Knowledge Keeper, Land Steward and Wellness Coordinator, learning from their expertise while delivering teachings and programming to camp participants. As a team develop food Sovereignty Initiatives eg. community gardens, orchards, farming etc. Oneida Language and knowledge of the Oneida Thanksgiving Address are essential for this role.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Program Delivery: Assist in delivering camp programs and activities, incorporating Oneida teachings and Ensure participants have a meaningful and engaging experience.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Land Steward, Lead Hunter and Wellness Coordinator to integrate traditional ecological knowledge, wellness practices, and cultural teachings into camp activities.
  • Mentorship: Act as role models and mentors for camp participants, fostering a positive and respectful learning environment.
  • Language Preservation: Promote the use of the Oneida language within the camp. Conduct the Oneida Opening and encourage participants to learn and use the
  • Teaching and Learning: Continuously learn from the Land Steward and Knowledge Keepers and other various teachers and facilitators, and share your own knowledge and skills with participants and fellow staff members.

 

  • Supervision: Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of camp participants during activities and throughout the camp day.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to enhance program offerings and ensure cultural practices are respected.
  • Support: Provide support to participants, addressing any concerns or needs they may have. Offer guidance and encouragement throughout their camp experience.
  • Preparation: Assist in the preparation and organization of camp activities, including setting up and cleaning up materials and spaces.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

  • Language Proficiency: Beginner to Intermediate, demonstrating a commitment to learning. Ability to conduct the Thanksgiving Address at an intermediate level.
  • Cultural Knowledge: Understanding of Oneida teachings and
  • Experience: Previous experience working with children and youth in a camp or educational setting is an asset. Land Based Experience is a strong asset.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal communication Ability to effectively engage with and teach participants.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with participants, staff, and community members.
