POSITION TITLE: CULTURAL OUTREACH COUNSELLOR
REPORTING PROTOCAL: REPORTS DIRECTLY TO CHILD & FAMILY SERVICES ………………………………………DIRECTOR
POSITION SUMMARY: The Cultural Outreach Counsellor (COC) will work directly with Kettle & Stony Point First Nation male population. They will provide immediate counselling support when secondary trauma is experienced due to the direct involvement of a child welfare agency. The COC will address counselling needs due to historic trauma and its impacts and coordinate and facilitate culturally based teachings to relearn and reclaim male roles and responsibilities within the family unit. Through programs offered and engaging the Elders/Healers for talking circles, and cultural teachings/ceremonies they will assist in developing to enhance Indigenous knowledge and identity while promoting healing and reconciliation. COC will support individuals to build stronger families by enhancing peoples’ lives through personal growth and development. As well as Will providing awareness programs and referrals to appropriate internal and external organizations to address addictions parenting capacity, domestic violence, etc. They will collaborate with clients in the development of a plan of care directed towards addressing the root causes of their individual issues and will provide outreach through attending home visits, addiction management centers, court buildings, healing lodges, land-based ceremonies, etc. Consistent follow-up will be required to support the family. The Cultural Outreach Counsellor will act as a cultural resource to ensure that the male/father’s perspective is being respected and implemented by the child welfare agencies.
