POSITION TITLE: CUSTOMARY CARE WORKER
REPORTING PROTOCAL: REPORTS DIRECTLY TO CHILD & FAMILY SERVICES ………………………………………DIRECTOR
POSITION SUMMARY: The Customary Care Worker (CCW) will assist the Band Representatives with customary care options (traditional and formal), by supporting placements of the Nation’s children/youth in customary care homes. The CCW is responsible to coordinate the development of customary care agreements with First Nation communities. Develop family genealogy for the purpose of connecting children with family, extended family or community members. They will provide recruitment and training, for perspective customary care homes as well as manage family case files and supportive services for the customary care homes. CCW will provide community care/customary caregivers with child welfare information to ensure they have appropriate information available for decision-making. They will strengthen relationships with local Children’s Aid Societies with focus on the Nation’s diverse cultural values regarding customary care. CCW will work with the child welfare agencies for repatriation and reunification of the Nation members and develop and provide family-focused programs for the family’s success in the reunification process.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- University Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Social Science, Child and Youth Worker or related field.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 3 years’ working in Social Services or related field with First Nation families.
- Expert knowledge of Customary Care, service development and delivery.
- Must have extensive knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
- Proven knowledge of First Nations community standards, the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and other relevant provincial or federal legislation / standards and guidelines.
- Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have dependable transportation.
- Will be subject to a vulnerable section Criminal Reference Check and updated as required.
- Knowledge of Section 10 of the CFSA as it relates to First Nations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Depending on the particulars of the case file, the Customary Care Worker may undertake the following range of activities:
- Will work directly with the Band Representative by assisting with customary care home options.
- Will assist with immediate responses for the placement of the First Nations children/youth deemed in need of protection by a child welfare agency
- Will connect with community members seeking to offer their homes as kin/customary care placements for KSPFN children who may require temporary or long-term placement outside of their home.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS CONTINUED:
- Will work with families through the implementation of Formal Customary Care Agreements and acquiring the Band Council Resolutions to support the agreement.
- Connect with the KSPFN members who are currently in child welfare care and/or have been adopted, including looking historically at families disconnected through the 60’s scoop.
- Assist the Legal Assistant Court Worker prepare Customary Care Agreement for Band Council Resolution and court submission.
CASE EVALUATION / DEVELOPMENT:
- Will work with the Kettle & Stony Point Membership Clerk to develop family trees to determine familial connections to place children according to the community’s cultural beliefs and values.
- The Customary Care Worker will develop and implement programs for repatriation to community, family, cultural events, traditional knowledge, ceremonies, Elders and Healers.
