Position:

Walpole Island First Nation is seeking a dynamic, student-centered Health and Physical Education Teacher to join our vibrant elementary school team. The ideal candidate will provide developmentally appropriate and culturally grounded health and physical education programming to students from Kindergarten through Grade 8, in accordance with the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum.

We are looking for a teacher who promotes physical literacy, well-being, and community while integrating Indigenous knowledge, traditional games, and land-based learning. This role plays an essential part in promoting healthy, active lifestyle in a respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver health and physical education programming for K-8 students based on the Ontario Curriculum
  • Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment where all students feel encouraged to participate
  • Promote student well-being, physical literacy, and lifelong healthy habits through engaging and active instruction
  • Incorporate Anishinaabe traditional games, teachings, and outdoor learning into programming
  • Collaborate with homeroom teachers and support staff to embed health and wellness into the broader curriculum
  • Monitor, assess, and document student growth using a range of strategies and tools
  • Support school-wide initiatives such as sports days, wellness programs, and cultural celebrations
  • Maintain physical education equipment, materials, and spaces
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning opportunities, and community events
  • Engage in culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching practices
  • Uphold the values of respect, humility, and community in alignment with Anishinaabe teachings
  • Support language revitalization and cultural education through the use of Anishinaabemowin where appropriate

Experience and Qualifications

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from an accredited institution
  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing
  • Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate teaching qualifications, with Health and Physical Education specialization or AQ
  • Experience or willingness to integrate Anishinaabe values, land-based learning, and cultural teachings into the classroom
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills, especially in active learning environments
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certificateion (or willingness to obtain)
  • Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

Assets:

  • Experience teaching health and physical education in First Nation or rural schools
  • Background in coaching or organizing extracurricular sports and school-wide physical activities
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning frameworks
  • Understanding of or openness to learning Anishinaabe language, culture, and traditions
  • Experience in adaptive physical education or Special Education qualifications
