PURPOSE OF POSITION:
- The Indigenous Community Educator will assist in the daily operations of the C. M. Wilson Learning Centre and the Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum at the Longwoods Road Conservation Area. The position involves the teaching of educational programs, including Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Environmental Studies programming. The position involves the development and execution of special events and other forms of community engagement delivered at the C.M. Wilson Conservation Area, Longwoods Road Conservation Area, and throughout the Lower Thames watershed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of Indigenous teachings relevant to this positon;
- Proven ability to deal with public in a positive manner;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, tact and judgement;
- Demonstrable class / group management skills in both indoor and outdoor settings;
- Comfortable working with students and adults, all ages and abilities, in all weather conditions;
- Highly developed analytical, organizational and administrative skills and practices;
- Ability to develop positive relationships with the public, media and community organizations;
- Ability to multitask and prioritize;
- Life experience, volunteer history, and community leadership highly valued;
- A degree from a recognized college or university in a natural resources, Indigenous Knowledge or other related discipline would be beneficial
- A Bachelor of Education degree would be beneficial ;
- Competence with MS Office software, Adobe Creative Suite;
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and acceptable drivers abstract;
- Able to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
This is a full-time position, with a 3 month probationary period.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering education programs, with both natural resource and Indigenous heritage/cultural themes (including Indigenous Traditional Knowledge).
- Provide curriculum-based learning opportunities for school and community groups, both outdoor and in-class, topics expounding the importance of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and its connections to water, wildlife, plants and soil.
- Deal with public inquiries and encourage a positive sense of value in our watershed.
- Implement and initiate programs, for events and target groups that involve participants and stir a connection to the wonders that surround us.
- Encourage and maintain, with school teachers, appropriate student behavior conducive to class learning, providing a safe learning environment for all visiting individuals.
- Develop effective displays that provide interaction/manipulation opportunities.
- Provide mentoring to co-op students that enables and empowers their abilities and sense of worth.
- Work with education team in developing a wide variety of curriculum based programming for Education Centres.
- Daily program setup and cleanup.
- Grant searches and applications, including working with donors, as required.
- Develop and maintain strong, positive relationships with community members, donors, service clubs, and private businesses.
- Assist with the development and delivery of programming at the C.M. Wilson Learning Centre and Longwoods Road Conservation Area.
- Attend/participate in staff, Board or Committee meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned
COMPENSATION & HOURS:
Wage: $29.40/hour
Weekly Hours: 35 Hours
Vacation Time: The employee shall be eligible for all statutory holidays and 2 weeks vacation prorated in the first calendar year of employment.
Benefits: Eligible for benefits RRSPs pending a satisfactory review after 3-month probationary period.
