The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications for the position of Indigenous Cultural Resource and Land Based Liaison – temporary – 1.0 F.T.E. This position falls within the O.S.S.T.F.-P.S.S.P. Bargaining Unit
This position is a designated visible minority position. This is a temporary, 35 hour per week position that supports both elementary and secondary students.

Nature & Scope of Position:
The successful applicant, under the direction of the Superintendent of Education responsible for Indigenous Education, will:
- Work closely with the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee to provide mentoring, guidance and land based experiential learning opportunities to FNMI students across the GECDSB system.
- Plan all details of land based and experiential learning opportunities for GECDSB Indigenous students.
- Lead land based or other culturally based learning opportunities for GECDSB Indigenous students and their families.
- Provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners to strengthen their cultural understandings and practices.
- Participate as an integral member of the Open Minds Team
- Identify strategies, milestones, and indicators to support Indigenous students to engage in learning and culturally based learning opportunities land based or otherwise.
- Establish trusting relationships with Indigenous students, their families and communities.
- Manage budgets aligned to culturally based learning experiences.
- Collect and analyze data to monitor progress of achievement of the program’s goals and impact on student success throughout the GECDSB.
- Plan for cultural events such as the Round Dance;
- Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, antiracist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
- Support all duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Education.
Qualifications:
- A deep understanding of the systemic barriers and challenges that Indigenous students face in the education system and in the wider community.
- A thorough understanding of culturally based and land-based learning.
- Strong advocacy skills to support individual and collective student voice.
- An understanding of the Board’s Strategic Priorities, the Student Achievement Plan and the Indigenous Education Action Plan.
- A high degree of enthusiasm, motivation and commitment in order to achieve the program’s goals and objectives.
- Superior organization and time management skills developed through years of progressive experience planning and facilitating large scale events with several participants
- Experience working with clients with Indigenous background is required.
- A degree in Indigenous Studies or a related discipline from an accredited university or college is an asset.
- Knowledge of an Indigenous Language would be an asset.
- Trauma, Restorative Practices and/or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is considered an asset.
- The successful candidate must be willing to work flexible hours that meet the needs of the students including evenings and weekends if needed.
