Summary:
The IRS Communications Officer plays a critical role in ensuring effective communication, branding, and public engagement for the IRS (Indian Residential Schools) project. This position is integral to maintaining transparency and accessibility of information related to the investigation while respecting the project’s sensitivity and responsibilities. The IRS Communications Officer will ensure that effective communication is fostered, as well as maintain the integrity of the IRS project. This position requires a combination of strategic thinking, sensitivity, digital/traditional media and communication skills to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
Scope: The IRS Communications Officer is an integral part of the Administration Team. The incumbent will work to support the various departments on the IRS Committee’s programs and initiatives as they relate to the Mt.Elgin investigation.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Ensure that branding for the IRS project is consistent across all participating departments regarding the investigation and it relates to communications materials and public image.
- Ensure that information regarding the IRS project is available to stakeholders in an understandable manner, while giving them the opportunity to engage via various methods in an accessible format, including paper communications where necessary.
- Provide ongoing communications (events, digital media, engagements, content creation, the Mazinigan, websites, design, etc.) support to the various departmental initiatives, endeavors and responsibilities re: the IRS project.
- Creation of a Communications Strategy, taking into consideration the sensitivity of the project and responsibilities of the investigation, as a blueprint for communication to membership, home nations, the public and the media.
- Act as a point of contact and resource for Media Relations as it relates to the needs of the IRS project while following the communications strategy.
Qualifications:
- A two-year postsecondary degree in Communications, Interactive Media, or a related discipline or program cluster or a one-year diploma or certificate along with a graduate certificate in a related media or Communications cluster.
- A desire to learn more about the digital communications industry as it relates to Indigenous Relations, public service, and governance.
- Tactful, diplomatic and resourceful mannerism along with excellent written and oral communications skills
- Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and their usage in relation to Indigenous corporate, public service and government communications, including, but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
- Some knowledge of project management and Agile methodology
- Critical thinking skills
- The ability to maintain composure and a professional manner online and in person
- Base knowledge of HTML and CSS
- Some experience with WordPress
- Javascript, and PHP considered an asset
- Cognizant and empathetic of social justice and Indigenous relations and history
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities
- Works effectively as a team player and also with minimal supervision
