Chippewa of the Thames First Nation is accepting applications for the position of:

Janitor

Start Date: Immediately

Work Hours: Monday through Friday (8hrs) (split shifts) Work

Location: Chippewas of the Thames SOAHAC Centre

Posting Date: September 6, 2023

Reports To: Janitor Supervisor

Department: Public Works

SUMMARY:

The Janitor maintains the cleanliness of the SOAHAC Centre by completing tasks on a daily, weekly and seasonal basis. The Janitor provides clean, sanitary, comfortable, and orderly surroundings for the staff and visitors of the SOAHAC Centre.

SCOPE:

The SOAHAC Centre Janitor works independently as well as assists the Health Centre team when needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Daily:

  • Dusts all surfaces, such as desks, computers and filing cabinets;
  • Wipes down all phones and chair legs in the boardroom;
  • Cleans all window ledges;
  • Cleans and disinfects all washrooms sinks, toilet bowls, fixtures and floors;
  • Wipes and disinfects all door handles;
  • Sweeps and washes office floors, hallways and photocopy room;
  • Vacuums all rugs;
  • Empties all garbage cans;
  • Removes all garbage and place in the bins outside;
  • Fills soap dispensers, paper towels, toilet paper, etc.,
  • Sets alarm upon departing the building and ensure the building is secure;

Weekly:

  • Washes down all the garbage cans;
  • Vacuums all fabric chairs;
  • Disinfects kitchen table and cabinets;
  • Cleans and disinfects kitchen sinks and office sinks;
  • Wipes down range hood in boardroom;

Seasonal:

  • Cleans bathroom vent;
  • Cleans all inside and outside windows;
  • Snow removal from entrances/exits, salting/sanding
  • Order supplies as needed;
  • Health and Safety:
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment;
  • Notifies Janitorial Supervisor of any concerns;
  • Understand role and responsibility in maintaining a safe workplace and reducing workplace injuries;

Teamwork/Collaboration:

  • Participates in team meetings and other meetings that require attendance;
  • Assists and supports SOAHAC department staff when required;

Professional Accountability and Development:

  • Maintains confidentiality at all times;
  • Criminal records check, every year or as requested by the employer;
  • Signed Oath of Confidentiality and Code of Conduct upon hire and every year thereafter;
  • Conducts self in a professional manner at all times;
  • Identifies training needs and attends relevant conferences and workshops approved by Program Director or designate in order to increase and maintain knowledge, skills and professional competency;
  • Maintains current and valid training in accordance to janitorial department’s accreditation standards, includes but is not limited to: First Aid/CPR, ASIST, Safe TALK, Mental Health First Aid, WHMIS, Diversity Training, Safe Food Handling, Privacy Training, etc.;
  • Keeps current on organization policies and procedures, relevant legislation and their updates.
  • completes training to meet organizational needs as identified for the position and as an employee of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation;

Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, GED or equivalent;
  • Previous janitorial experience an asset;
  • Must be able to lift and push heavy objects (furniture, garbage bins, etc.);
  • Current First Aid/CPR certificate;
  • WHMIS certification;
  • Current Police Check, each year or as requested and maintains clean record check for duration of employment;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently;
  • A registered member of a First nation as per Section 16(1) of the Human Rights Act is preferred.

Knowledge:

  • WHMIS;
  • Knowledge of the safe usage of cleaners;
  • Trained in ladder safety;
  • Trained in floor waxing course;

Working Conditions: The work is done primarily indoors; in the evenings and is completed by working alone. The incumbent is required to go outside when taking garbage to the bins.

Physical Effort: The work requires considerable use of arms, legs and moving whole body, when climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, mopping, stooping, and handling of materials. Work normally requires a moderate level of manual dexterity for aspects of fine cleaning.

Mental Effort: There is a set time in which the building is to be cleaned which requires a systematic approach and concentration to ensure all tasks are done. At times, repetitiveness of tasks adds to mental effort to remain engaged.
