Position Title: Land Stewardship coordinator

Location: 13 Moons Land-Based Learning Camp

Employment Type: Full-Time

Term: 2 Years

 

Salary: $65000 Plus Benefits Package

Position Summary: The 13 Moons Land-Based Learning Camp is seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated Land Steward and Cultural Leader to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Lead Hunter, Knowledge Keeper and Wellness Coordinator ensuring the land is respected and maintained according to traditional practices. This role requires experience in the Oneida language, knowledge of Oneida teachings, and an understanding of the responsibilities associated with each 13 Moon Cycles according to natural law. The Land Steward and Cultural Leader will play a pivotal role in teaching and sharing these land and water ways, traditions and ceremonies with participants and staff.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Land Stewardship: Oversee the maintenance and stewardship of the land, ensuring it is respected and cared for according to traditional Oneida practices. Design ecological services as a team. As a team develop food Sovereignty Initiatives e.g.. community gardens, orchards, farming etc.
  • Cultural Leadership: Lead cultural activities and ceremonies, Oneida Creation stories, thanksgiving, water ceremonies, land teachings, social song and dance ensuring these practices are upheld and respected.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Lead Hunter to integrate traditional ecological knowledge and practices into camp Learn from the Lead Hunter and share your own knowledge and expertise on the land.
  • Teaching and Mentoring: Educate camp participants about Oneida teachings, the significance of each moon, and the responsibilities associated with them. Provide mentorship and guidance to both staff and participants.
  • Language Preservation: Promote the use of the Oneida language within the camp, develop learning modules and encourage participants and staff to learn and use the language. Work closely with the Youth Mentorship Workers.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with Elders and community members to ensure cultural practices are accurately represented and Facilitate the involvement of community members in camp activities.
  • Program Development: Assist in the development of programs and activities that incorporate Oneida teachings and Ensure these programs are culturally appropriate and educational.
  • Sustainability Practices: Advocate for and implement sustainable practices that honor the land and its resources. Promote ecological stewardship services within the curriculum and among camp participants.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

  • Language Proficiency: Intermediate to Fluency in the Oneida
  • Cultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of Oneida teachings, traditions, and the responsibilities associated with each moon.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a similar role, with a focus on cultural leadership and land stewardship. Experience in teaching and mentoring is an asset.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication Ability to effectively share knowledge and engage with diverse audiences.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience guiding cultural activities and ceremonies.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with community members, staff, and participants.
  • Commitment: A deep commitment to the preservation and promotion of Oneida language, culture and traditions.
