Job Description

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has an opportunity for a motivated, self-directed Public Health Inspector to work on the Food Safety and Health Hazards team within the Environmental Health, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Services division. The PHI will report to the Manager, Food Safety and Health Hazards. This is a full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive environmental health programs in the community including FS&HH program work which may include but is not limited to: food premises inspections, special event inspections, health hazard investigations and service requests, housing inspections and various other special projects.
  • Apply expertise in the areas of prevention, enforcement, promotion, protection, education, and research.
  • Protect individual and community wellness through application of a variety of professional and technical skills in health protection, health promotion, and enforcement activities.
  • Provide coverage and client service in all EH program work including Safe Water, Tobacco Enforcement and Vector Borne Disease teamwork.
  • Client service and program coverage includes participation in office duty work, evening shift coverage and on-call weekends; and,
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A four-year Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Health.
  • Certification as a Public Health Inspector by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors CIPHI.
  • Working knowledge of Provincial Legislation concerning Public Health and the Ontario Public Health Standards, Protocols and Guidelines.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office and database software (Hedgehog), and strong documentation skills.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to influence and de-escalate complex and/or challenging situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse population, has knowledge of health inequities.
  • The ability to communicate (oral and written) in French and/or any other language(s) is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in FSHH program work, health promotion, and enforcement of legislation is a strong asset.

The salary for this position ranges from $68,868 to $86,034 based on qualifications and experience.
