Job Title: Akwe:go Program Coordinator

Particulars: 32 Hours per week

Location: 2929 Howard Ave., Windsor, ON N8X 4W4

Job Purpose:

The Akwe:go program is grounded in cultural traditions providing a sense of belonging for urban Indigenous children ages 7 – 12. The program offers a variety of strategies such as one-to-one activities, group activities, and family circles to encourage positive behaviours and wellbeing. The program supports individualized goals to enhance the child’s needs such as social skill development, educational intervention, violence prevention, children in care or at risk of being in the care of the Children’s Aid Society, 2SLGBTQ+ supports, and positive nutrition and physical activity. The Akwe:go program provides a space where urban Indigenous children can feel to be themselves and accepted. An added component of the Akwe:go program is the Student Nutrition Program (SNP). The SNP seeks to improve the ability of children and youth to concentrate and succeed, both in school and daily life, through the provision of healthy meals and snacks.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally appropriate programming that engages at-risk youth and promotes a healthy lifestyle
  • Provide referrals to appropriate services as required and liaise with Indigenous and mainstream resources and supports
  • Participate in case conference and plans of care as provided by a Children’s Aid Society (CAS) to support and ensure the needs of youth are met
  • Collaborate with local Indigenous and mainstream organizations, businesses, and institutions to pursue additional opportunities for children and youth
  • Develop and support transition plans with direct-service users exiting the program
  • Practice and role model cultural competency and cultural safety using a trauma informed approach within the broader community
  • Provide healthy meals and snacks in adherence to the Student Nutrition Program by utilizing SNP dollars to supplement the cost of snacks and meals for their clients during the time(s) they are receiving services.
  • Maintain an up-to-date and confidential client records keeping system and database
  • Provide one-on-one peer support as needed.
  • Participate with program initiatives, and reporting requirements as directed and adopted by the program management policy
  • Perform other such duties as may be assigned from time to time i.e. newsletter submission, CAIFC events coordination and planning, attend staff meetings

Experience and Qualifications

Education:

  • Relevant Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Work, Indigenous Studies and/or related training and minimum of 2 years work experience

Experience/Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in working with Indigenous communities
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, residential school issues, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach
  • Knowledge of available Indigenous and mainstream services resources in the community and surrounding area
  • Experience in program development, design, implementation and evaluation
  • Experience in case management, case conferencing and compiling statistics
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills, as well as presentation, human relations and communication skills
  • Able to work flexible schedule, including extended hours or weekends as required
  • Must have a valid Ontario Drivers’ License or access to an insured vehicle for client transportation and able to travel.
