POSITION: ALTERNATIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM COORDINATOR

TERM: PERMANENT 35 HOURS/ WEEK

Wage: BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Alternative Secondary School Program Coordinator (ASSPC) will ensure the effective delivery of the Alternative Secondary School Program (ASSP) such that the needs of the urban Indigenous students referred to the program are met in a culturally appropriate manner. The ASSPC will liaise with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) and the TVDSB teacher assigned to Wiingashk Alternative School. The Alternative Secondary School Program Coordinator will be under the direct supervision of the Section Manager of N’Amerind Friendship Centre.

Duties:
• Provide guidance and supports for Indigenous students to achieve their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
• Collaborate as a team member with the TVDSB to consult, intake, review and make decisions regarding students meet their curriculum needs.
• Advocate for the incorporation of Indigenous culture, teachings and language in the ASSP curriculum.
• Establish a network of Indigenous knowledge keepers and community members to regularly assist in providing Indigenous teachings and experiences for students.
• Contribute to the development of the Memorandum of Understanding with the TVDSB.
• Manage social challenges and provide crisis intervention support to students as necessary.
• Provides wrap-around services and a strengths-based action plan for each student.
• Promotes awareness of, and ensure access to, the program through a variety of outreach efforts and promotional activities.
• Refer students to appropriate services as required, and document, advocate, and liaise with internal and external resources and supports.
• Establish working relationships and partnerships with local community organizations to best meet the needs of the program.
• Accurately report and ensure all program objectives are being met in accordance with agreements, and the OFIFC Integrated Database reporting system.
• Demonstrate a passion for, and be willing to be a role model, for healthy lifestyle behaviours.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Section Manager.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Child and Youth Worker or combination of the equivalent and relevant education.
• Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated and related work experience with youth.
• Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on impacts of residential schools.
• Strong understanding of the Education Act and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
• Knowledge of available Indigenous service resources in the community and surrounding area.
• Excellent oral, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven, positive, proactive experience in working with people of Indigenous ancestry.
• Computer proficiency, including word processing and database programs.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work flexible hours.
• Experience in presenting educational workshops and facilitating groups.
• Access to a reliable vehicle.
