First Nation Student Advocate Worker

Location: Delaware Nation Education Department

Job Status: Contract, 35 hours per week

Salary: $60,000.00

Closing Date: Friday, October 10, 2025 at 4pm

The Delaware Nation Council is currently accepting applications for a First Nation Student Advocate Worker within the Education Department.

Supervision: The First Nation Student Advocate Worker shall be under the supervision of the Delaware Nation Education Manager.

Scope: The First Nation Student Advocate Worker reports to the Education Manager and provides support to Eelŭnaapéewi Lahkéewiit students enrolled in elementary and secondary school as it relates to special education, academic success, and liaison with parents, teachers and principals.

The First Nation Student Advocate Worker supports students in a culturally relevant manner to address any issues or concerns that impact their studies, such as wellness and achievement and works to case manage and advocate.

The First Nation Student Advocate Worker is part of an interdisciplinary team to provide services for students and families in developing a plan for student engagement and supports that will assist students in reaching their full potential.

Employment Conditions:

This will be a full-time contract, possibly leading to a permanent status.

Duties & Responsibilities (to include but not be limited to the following):

  • Monitoring of student Individual Education Plans and identifying services as needed.
  • Create a supportive, encouraging environment for students and their families
  • To facilitate effective links between families and schools, including setting up meetings, accompanying to meetings, and acting as an advocate when appropriate.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of community agencies and make referrals in the provision of family support and or counselling.
  • Maintain student data and records.
  • Work with school boards’ Attendance Office, school principals, as necessary.

Other Duties:

  • May be required to assist with other programs, services or projects as time permits.

 

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Delaware Nation community
  • Graduate of post-secondary program in Child & Youth Worker, Social Service Worker or another equivalent program
  • High level of appreciation of First Nation issues, particularly relating to First Nation youth.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide client assessment and written reports
  • Willingness to take Ontario Native Education Counselling Association’s Ontario Native Education Counselling training course.
  • Excellent public relations skills, including an appreciation of the need for tact, discretion and a positive, cheerful and informed approach with the public.
  • Knowledge of data management systems and the ability to generate reports an asset
  • Experience in crisis intervention skills
  • Work closely with Delaware Nation Child and Family Services
  • Experience with student assessment and student data analysis
  • Computer Literate- (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to manage multi-projects with identified deadlines.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Current criminal reference check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Ability to sign and comply with an Oath of Confidentiality.
