GIS Technician

REPORTS TO: Treaty, Lands and Environment (TLE) Director; Senior Environment Officer
DEPARTMENT: Treaty, Lands and Environment (TLE)
LOCATION: Band Office, 320 Chippewa Road, Muncey Ontario
TERM: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30am- 4:30pm EST
RATE OF PAY: $25.00-$30.00/hr

Summary:
Do you have education and experience with Geographic Information Systems? Are you an Indigenous Person and/or do you have interest or experience working with a local First Nation on mapping initiatives? Chippewas of the Thames First Nation is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented GIS Technician to support the Department of Treaties, Lands, and Environment in implementing community-oriented projects. The incumbent will assist in developing and supporting mapping projects, including sub-watershed mapping, nature-based solutions for phosphorous management, species at risk mapping, community and regional land use planning, and other initiatives as identified by the department. The ideal candidate will possess strong GIS knowledge and be capable of applying GIS principles to design and implement applied research for community-focused projects.

Responsibilities:
• Collect, analyze, and interpret geographic data from various sources.
• Create and maintain accurate GIS databases.
• Produce high-quality maps and data visualizations for reporting and decision-making purposes.
• Collaborate with colleagues to assess project requirements and provide geospatial solutions.
• Conduct spatial analysis and geoprocessing tasks using industry-standard GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
• Prepare reports and presentations to effectively communicate findings and recommendations to staff, council, and the community.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Minimum of a High-school diploma (O.S.S.D).
• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
• Strong skills in spatial analysis, geospatial data management, and map design.
• Attention to detail and ability to maintain data accuracy.
• Field data collection experience for mapping purposes.
• Familiarity with remote sensing, geodatabases, and spatial data formats.
• Excellent team player with effective communication skills to present technical data clearly and concisely.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet project deadlines.
