POSITION: GLADUE WRITER

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Under the direct supervision of the Justice Section Manager, the successful candidate will be an energetic, innovative caring person who will assist Indigenous persons who come into conflict with the judicial system. The Gladue Writer will produce Gladue reports that address the systemic factors that play a part in bringing the offender before the courts. The Gladue Writer will prepare reports for Indigenous offenders including research and interviews. The reports will develop recommendations and sentencing options appropriate to the Indigenous offender.
Duties:
• Conduct interviews with offenders and their family members
• Interview individuals impacted by the actions of the offender
• Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate the preparation of Gladue reports
• Ability to manage a caseload and complete Gladue reports within established timelines
• Attend court as required to identify referrals, coordinate timelines, and respond to court-related inquiries
• Maintain and strengthen partnerships with judicial and community stakeholders in the development, implementation and of the N’Amerind Gladue Writer Program
• Liaise with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers and community resources
• Manage and maintain all program documentation including activity records, consent forms, Gladue referral guidelines, and client files
• Prepare and submit activity, statistical, and narrative reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
Qualifications:
• Solid understanding of the Canadian justice system including R.V. Gladue, Indigenous Community Justice principles, and Alternative/Restorative Justice Programs
• Experience working with individuals of Indigenous ancestry
• Post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in justice, social services or a related field; or a minimum of four years of relevant work experience
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License, access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel
• Knowledge of available Indigenous community support resources
• Strong interview, counselling, and interpersonal skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and under supervision
• Flexible availability, including the ability to work outside regular business hours when necessary
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
• Strong research skills with attention to detail
• Self-motivated and able to take initiative.
• In-depth knowledge of issues impacting Indigenous peoples, including but not limited to: the residential school system, the Sixties Scoop, racism poverty, cultural and language loss, and the effects of intergenerational trauma
• A deep and respectful understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions
• Familiarity with the principles and practices of the Gladue Writer Program
• Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality
• All client files must be maintained in accordance with the File Maintenance Policy
