Job Description

  • Carry out various projects including the development and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and programs, preparation of physical demands descriptions, job hazard analysis, compiling injury/incident statistics, metrics and reports, conducting research, development of guides or training program materials.
  • Oversee the employee incident reporting and investigation process, which includes incident investigations, follow up with management and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), liaising with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration Training and Skills Development (as needed), etc.
  • Oversee the employee immunization program, which includes compliance follow up, reporting, data analysis and supporting recommendations for policy direction.
  • Manage the WSIB claim management process and functions as a liaison between WSIB and MLHU.
  • Provide advice, counsel, recommendations, and/or training in the areas of OHS legislation,hazard and risk mitigation, domestic violence, workplace violence related issues, ergonomic reviews/assessments, and workplace accommodations.
  • Chair the JOHSC and serves on other committees (e.g. Wellness) to meet the goals of the OHS program.
  • Oversee the work of a direct report and troubleshoots problems arising in daily work activities.
  • Engage in culturally humble ways with partners and other relevant parties with the aim of enhancing collective capacity to address social determinants of health and health equity;
  • Contribute to team and organizational capacity by sharing knowledge and expertise, orienting and mentoring students and staff, and providing operational coverage during colleagues’ absences;
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience and Qualifications

  • University degree in Occupational Health and Safety; or a degree in Human Resources or a related field combined with a post-secondary diploma or certificate in Health and Safety.
  • Three to five years of direct experience working in Occupational Health and Safety, with a preference for experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Certifications in Health & Safety, including JHSC & CPR, and training in Ergonomics, Workplace Investigations, and Domestic and Workplace Violence.
  • Working knowledge of all relevant Acts, legislation and regulations, e.g. Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, etc.
  • Flexibility and good problem-solving ability and excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Professional demeanor with proven customer service skills and presentation skills.
  • Strong discretion to deal with sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Exceptional organization skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities/inquiries/requests to perform independently and effectively.
  • Excellent computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems & databases (Dayforce preferred).
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively in a team environment with internal colleagues and management at all levels, as well as with external partners.
