PROGRAM AREA: MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS HUB
POSITION TITLE: MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE NURSE
REPORTING PROTOCOL: REPORTS TO MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION PROGRAM MANAGER

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse functions as part of the Hub’s Collaborative Care Team to meet the dynamic and complex needs of community members with mental health and substance use challenges. This entails providing low-barrier and rapid access to health care for mental health and addictions in the planning, implementation and evaluation of direct client care. A key focus of the position is working with the community’s Addiction Medicine Physician to provide addictions medicine care to community members with substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position is located at the Mental Health and Wellness Hub in Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. Most commonly, staff will work with clients in public places, and occasionally in their homes. Exposure to second hand smoke is possible in these situations. This position requires flexible working hours. The nature of the position will place the worker in emotionally charged situations where there is some risk of physical injury. The worker will also be exposed to risks posed by members of the public who live with/near or interact with clients.

Experience and Qualifications

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
▪ Be a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
▪ A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a community organization, with at least 1 year of experience working in the field of mental health and addictions
▪ Post-graduate certification in the field of mental health and addictions nursing is considered an asset
▪ Attending a graduate program in addictions and mental health or acquiring a master’s degree in nursing is considered an asset
▪ Knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community supports and services
▪ Experience engaging and working with Indigenous peoples in a community setting
▪ A demonstrated knowledge, awareness and sensitivity to Indigenous values, beliefs and traditions, including traditional healing practices
▪ Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are required

SKILLS REQUIRED:
▪ Demonstrated ability to assess mental health status, including suicide risk
▪ Demonstrated knowledge of substance use disorder as a medical condition with complex causes and associated neurobiological changes
▪ Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and addictions counselling and therapeutic techniques
▪ Ability to provide culturally competent and professional care supporting community members through the stages of life
▪ Ability to provide a wide range of support to improve wellness, achieve stability and increase resiliency
▪ Commitment to ongoing professional development and/or continuing education
▪ Knowledge of indigenous values, beliefs and practices
▪ Knowledge of the effects of colonization and intergenerational trauma, Indigenous health inequalities and the role of the social determinants of Indigenous health in promoting healing, recovery and optimal health and wellbeing
▪ Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to clients, other members of the Collaborative Care Team and community partners
▪ Ability to use critical judgement and problem solve
▪ Ability to complete charting in a timely manner using an electronic medical records system
▪ Ability to develop and facilitate workshops and to contribute to cultural competence training
▪ Ability to engage local communities in collaborative care and program planning
▪ Ability to effectively provide education and health promotion as required.
▪ Preference will be given to Indigenous persons, persons with extensive experience working with Indigenous communities and/or lived experience within these communities
