EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
OJIBWE CULTURE/LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR

SERVICE AGREEMENT – 30 HOURS WEEKLY
PROGRAM AREA: HEAD START/ DAYCARE
POSITION TITLE: OJIBWE CULTURE/LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR
REPORTING PROTOCOL: REPORTS TO HEAD START/DAYCARE PROGRAM MANAGER

POSITION SUMMARY:

To provide center-based and in-service training to parents/guardians, centre staff and children, which will enhance the parent’s ability to fill the role of primary educator of the child. Maintain on-going contact with families and work with all other Program components (Culture and Language; Education and School Readiness; Health Promotion; Nutrition; Social Support; Parental and Family Involvement) to integrate education goals and developmentally appropriate practices into the family setting under the direction of the Program Manager. To connect with and support parents while striving to build positive, interactive relationships with families. Build on the strengths of the family to make the family unit stronger and ultimately the parent stronger. To support families, children, staff and other service providers and ultimately the community to increase their comfort level for accessing services or programs.

Experience and Qualifications

EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
▪ Understanding of the Ojibwe culture and language required.
▪ Preference for local historical knowledge (Kettle and Stony Point).
▪ Native Language Teaching Certificate an asset.

SKILLS REQUIRED:
▪ Ability to retain the mission/vision of the Head Start/Day Care Program.
▪ Fluent in the Ojibwe culture and language.
▪ Retain vision, values, and culture of the Anishinabek Community.
▪ Knowledge of resources’ available to children 0-6 years of age and their families.
▪ Knowledge of available community resources.
▪ Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
▪ Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
▪ Demonstrate the ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all children including special needs, gifted, ensuring appropriate cultural content.
