POSITION: URBAN INDIGENOUS HEALTHY LIVING COORDINATOR

TERM: PERMANENT 35 Hours / Week

Wage: BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
To design and implement healthy lifestyle programming with the intent to improve health status through increased physical fitness; improved cardiovascular health; smoking reduction and improved nutritional
knowledge and practices. The Urban Indigenous Healthy Living Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Section Manager of N’Amerind Friendship Centre.

Duties:
• Consult with community to determine healthy lifestyle program needs and interests.
• Develop and manage the program schedule on a quarterly basis, reflecting community needs, interests, and available resources, while ensuring mandatory program components are met.
• Plan, organize, supervise, assess, and facilitate physical fitness and recreation programs, sports activities, healthy eating and weight management programs, youth leadership, and smoking cessation initiatives appropriate to participants’ knowledge and physical capabilities.
• Maintain and manage program activity records and participant files within the integrated database.
• Evaluate program effectiveness and identify for enhancement.
• Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with local community sports, fitness and recreation agencies/organizations.
• Collaboration with other N’Amerind staff on Friendship Centre activities and events.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Section Manager.
• Flexibility to work evening hours and weekends as required.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Sports and Recreation-related degree/diploma and/or equivalent work experience and certifications.
• Experience in physical fitness training, or willingness and ability to become certified to facilitate a broad range of physical fitness programs.
• Excellent knowledge about healthy lifestyle behaviours, specifically in nutrition, healthy weight management, and the benefits of living smoke-free.
• Knowledge of the Friendship Centre and the various programs provided to the community.
• Understanding of Indigenous culture and the social reality that Indigenous women, youth and seniors experience in an urban setting.
• Proven experience in program planning, development, implementation, data collection and evaluation.
• Skilled in presenting educational workshops and facilitating group sessions.
• Passionate about, and willing to be a role model for, healthy lifestyle behaviours.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to attend professional development opportunities.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain certifications.
• Sound understanding and appreciation of Indigenous Culture and related issues.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Access to a reliable vehicle.
