Job Title: Urban Indigenous Healthy Living Program Worker

Particulars: 32 Hours per week

Location: 2929 Howard Ave., Windsor, ON N8X 4W4

Job Purpose:

The Urban Indigenous Healthy Living Program (UIHLP) promotes healthy lifestyle choices and activities among the urban Indigenous community of Windsor-Essex. UIHLP has a specific focus on land-based and culturally grounded activities. Program delivery and activities are culturally appropriate and facilitate the outcomes targeted within this program’s mandate. The program’s purpose is to design and implement healthy lifestyle programs and supports for the urban Indigenous community with the intent to improve the health status of participants through increased physical fitness, improved cardiovascular health, smoking cessation, improved nutritional knowledge and access to nutritional supports

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Plan, organize and facilitate educational programs on nutrition
  • Provide access to healthy foods and implement programs that support healthy eating such as the centre’s food pantry
  • Plan, organize and facilitate recreational activities that encourage a healthy lifestyle at all ages
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre Staff
  • Create working relationships and liaise with Indigenous and mainstream community organizations such as local community supports, fitness and recreational agencies/organizations, schools and other relevant organizations/services
  • Ensure all programs and activities are facilitated to meet health and safety standards, addressing injury prevention
  • Participate in professional development as directed and required and ensure certification is up-to-date specifically for First Aid and CPR
  • Maintain and manage program activity records and client files
  • Provide one-on-one peer support as needed
  • Complete quarterly reporting
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

Experience and Qualifications

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Health Studies or combination of education and relevant work experience.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the social, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of the urban Indigenous community.
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history with an emphasis on the impacts of trauma, family violence and community outreach.
  • Demonstrated and related work experience within an Indigenous organization or community.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize competing work demands to ensure effective and efficient application of resources and services.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Drivers’ License and access to an insured vehicle
