Job Description

Summary: A Youth Counsellor is an individual who is responsible for building a sense of community within Nimkee Nupigawagan Healing Centre (NNHC) that can provide an opportunity for spiritual, mental, emotional and physical development. Youth Leaders organize regular social, educational, and spiritual oriented events with others on staff, guests and volunteers in order to maintain a vibrant program. They establish and  support appropriate relationships with their youth members and their families. Youth leaders also maintain good communication in order to keep events organized. The Youth Counsellor, under the direction of the Treatment Team Supervisor or designate, is part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for the delivery of care and service to youth experiencing addiction issues. The Youth Counsellor provides therapeutic, recreational and developmental programming in both individual, group as well as virtual settings. Youth leaders model a healthy lifestyle and positive relationship building. The focus of this residential experience is physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness through individual plans of care. Traditional Indigenous culture and healing is a foundational basis for treatment. Participation in traditional aboriginal cultural and lands-based programming, quality improvement initiatives and continuing education is expected. Dedication to high standards of practice, adherence to organizational policies, accreditation requirements and statutory obligations is expected along with a commitment to maintaining privacy and confidentiality for the youth and the organization. Responsibilities: Safety and SupervisionEnsure accurate account of all youth staying inEnsure all youth are being supervised at all timesEnsure all youth feel safe and are welcomed in their environmentEnsure all agreements and treatment plans are being followedHelp ensure that all NNHC property is properly maintained andTreat belongings in a respectful mannerAdminister medicine in a safe wayAbility to deal with conflict using an indigenous approachFollow Nimkee Nupigawagan policies and procedures, Health & Safety, Ethics and Confidentiality policies    Youth Activities and Group Facilitation Engage and build relationships with teens/youth in program appropriately, act as a role model, creating a safe, and welcoming environment for teens/youthDevelop and implement appropriate activity-based and leadership programsDevelop, implement, and co-facilitate various group games and activities. Will be developmentally appropriate for application to educational and leadership development outcomes.Assist in the planning, organization and operation of any of theAssist with planning and delivery of youth & family events and programs, either virtually or inLead or assist with coordination of transportation, including driving NNHC Van to transportHelp with activity set-up and clean up, utilize youth volunteers asInteract with youth in a respectful manner to provide a warm and welcomingEnsure that established systems and procedures areHelp ensure established rules of conduct are enforced consistently so all youth, families, staff, and visitors are treated with respect &Operate and promote the culturally-based and land-basedInstill a strength-based and person centered approach to inspire youth to highestImplement consistency and a structured environment during program, exercise, field trips, and free timeComplete programs that will be enriching and empowering to all participants in theFollow the program schedule, being consistent with what is offered as well as offerCreate a learning environment both academically (mentally), emotionally, spiritually and physically thus creating a balanced, healing environment that is dynamic andMaintain a positive relationship with all participants Documentation and ReportingComplete and submit monthly reports to Services Manager, asEnsure data collection, record keeping, and case notes are clear, accurate andEnter data as required into PracticeSubmit personal timesheets, expenses, leave requests or other administrative requirements to supervisor in a timelyEnsure that all outcomes of the youth assessments are clearly reflected and implemented in individual plan of care and case noting prepared in a diligent manner.Conduct group /circle sessions as directed andPlan and implement workshops related to substance abuse and mental health including presentation and discussion (prevention; intervention; or training workshops)Ensure youth files and records are up to date, and meet the standards of the Children’s Residential License and the Canadian Council on Health Services AccreditationParticipate in the preparation of aftercare and outreach treatment plans  OtherPromote a sense of community, safety, continuity and consistency throughout the youth’s treatment experienceDemonstrate a genuine expression of organizational values while fulfilling all duties and functionsDemonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to handle difficult situations in an objective consistent format, modelling positive behaviour for youthComplete light housekeeping duties during shifts and during shutdown and prior to intake sessionsParticipate in professional education program for employees and ensure skills and certifications areAdhere to Nimkee Policies and Procedures especially Qualifications and Requirements

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications:Abstainer with at least three years continuous sobriety is a requirement by organizational policy.Education & CertificationPost-Secondary education in Counselling or related discipline (e.g. Child and Youth Worker or equivalent qualifications)Certified as an Addictions Counsellor by an accredited certification body an assetUpon HiringCrisis Prevention and Intervention CPI or similar (UMAB)Applied Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST)Fire Extinguisher Handling TrainingInfection Control TrainingCPR and First Aid Certification, WHMIS TrainingSafe Food Handling Training Experience: Two years of experience working with children and youth, preferably in a residential or Indigenous program settingMust demonstrate an understanding of substance abuse treatmentSolid knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of service delivery to youth as well as program development, implementation and evaluationExperience with individual, group, family, play and art therapyMust have knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture and community lifeMust have demonstrated knowledge and awareness of cultural, and traditional teaching, universal to First Nations peoplesRegistered member of a First Nation as per section 16(1) of the Human Rights Act preferredFluency in a First Nations language is an assetExceptional interpersonal skills and ability to handle conflict and other difficult situations in an objective consistent formatAbove average problem-solving skillsPossess above average oral and written communication skillsMust have skills in data collection, analysis and report writingMust be able to work independently and as a team playerProficiency in computer software skills including Microsoft Office Suite Other (Including physical and mental requirements):Must be able to work flexible hours, shift work is requiredMust have a valid Ontario Driver’s License, a clear driving transcript and reliable transportationMust be able to lift 20 lbsMust be able to stand for at least 3 hoursMust be able to sit at a computer workstation for long time periodsMaintain high level of energyBe comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activitiesSpeak clearly and hearBe able to endure the weather
