Job Description

Position Title: Youth Worker

Location: Sarnia, ON

Duration: 12 month contract

Posting Closes/Deadline: June 28, 2024

Tentative Interview Dates: July 8/9, 2024

Position Summary

To provide leadership in the provision of recreational and self-enhancement program for the Aamjiwnaang First Nation youth for the term of this Agreement. Ensure the availability of, and access to the development, counselling and youth support programs and services. The position requires an availability to work non-standard hours and will involve occasional travel for a total of 40 hours/week.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver age-appropriate programs for the Aamjiwnaang youth
  • Provide individual supports, counseling, and referrals
  • Provide leadership in the provision of recreational and self-awareness/esteem program and services for the youth of Aamjiwnaang First Nation
  • Responsible for providing personal counselling to youth
  • Responsible for ensuring that availability youth support services and programs
  • To assist team managers with LHNL team registration, collate a list of LNHL participants for finance purposes
  • To assist with outside youth organization i.e., Scouts Canada
  • Responsible for assisting in developing and delivering youth related workshops, seminars, i.e., Basic Life Skills, Drugs and Alcohol, and arranging of special events
  • Responsible for assisting in the developing and maintenance of youth services documentation and files
  • Always maintain confidentiality for all clients
  • Responsible for identifying youth problems and trends; providing innovative initiatives to address such problems
  • Responsible assisting in the development of grant applications and annual operating budget of the delivery of youth programs and services, and the monitoring of the same
  • Perform administrative tasks as required, including work plan, budget, and reports.

  • Knowledge of existing programs and services to assist in mental wellness clients
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions well
  • Basic computer skills
  • ability to adapt to changing needs of clients
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Able to navigate internet and email use
  • Familiar with office equipment
  • Knowledge of completing program reports and collecting various program statistics.

Minimum Requirements

  • Strong understanding of issues and concerns for child and youth  mental health and substance use.
  • Knowledge of Child and Youth Development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Promote holistic mental wellness
  • Must display approachability and acceptance towards community and clients.
  • Must show flexibility and creativity and ability to adapt to client needs.
  • High level of appreciation and sensitivity to Indigenous issues, beliefs, and values.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Must successfully pass the vulnerable sector screening and criminal record check.

In accordance with Section 16 Special Programs of the Canadian Human Rights Act, preference will be given to Aamjiwnaang Band Members with relevant education/experience (R.S.C 1985, c. H-6. s16 (1-3).

Preference may be given to First Nation candidates with relevant on reserve employment and/or those with knowledge and understanding of Aamjiwnaang and history and community.
